New Drivers & Monitors
We are currently seeking regular drivers, substitute drivers, and substitute monitors.
If you are interested in becoming a member of the Transportation Department with Nash County Public Schools, please complete an online application. Links are available above, on the Transportation's main page and in the Employment section of the NCPS homepage NCPS Homepage. After you have submitted your application, please contact the Transportation Department at 252-462-2480 so staff can locate your application and move you to the next step, which is a background check.
Since 2017, all school bus drivers are required to obtain and maintain a valid DOT Medical Certification. An active DOT Medical Certificate is required in order to keep a Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with the “P” (Passenger) and “S” (School Bus) endorsements. In addition, new commercial drivers must obtain a CDL Permit and hold it for at least 14 days before becoming eligible to begin Behind-the-Wheel training.

REQUIREMENTS FOR ATTENDING NCPS BUS CLASS
Medical:
- Must be able bodied and free of physical handicaps, which would hamper safe operation of the bus.

Must have 20/40 vision in each eye with or without corrective lenses.

Must be able to obtain a DOT Medical Certificate.
Legal: (including, but not limited to)
-
No more than one moving violation within the past 12 months.

No convictions of +15 mph over any speed limit, reckless driving or passing a stopped school bus within the past 12 months.

A person is disqualified from driving a commercial motor vehicle for 60 days if that person is convicted of two serious traffic violations, or 120 days if convicted of three or more serious traffic violations, arising from separate incidents occurring within a three-year period, committed in a commercial motor vehicle or while holding a commercial drivers license.

No more than one conviction of driving while impaired (DWI/DUI) none within the past 5 years.

No suspension or revocation of driver's license within the past 5 years.

If you have had a driver's license from another state within the last 5 years, you must obtain a driving record from the state(s) of possession covering the past five years.

Must meet all the qualifications for obtaining a CDL as stipulated by the Federal State Agencies.

Have a cleared Criminal Record Check with Nash County Public Schools.

A negative Drug Screen is required.
Training:

The classroom portion is a three-day session from 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM and attendance all three days is mandatory.

Candidates are then required to pass pre-employment tests.

Candidates are then required to obtain a DOT Medical Certificate and CDL permit with P & S endorsements.

Roadwork is a four-day session and takes place upon the successful completion of the class and after obtaining a DOT Medical Certificate and CDL permit.

Candidates are scheduled by DMV for road training.
