Nash County Public Schools (NCPS) takes the safety of its students, staff, and community seriously. We are addressing an incident that occurred this afternoon, Friday, September 26, at Rocky Mount High School.

Shortly after dismissal, a vehicle entered campus and returned a short time later, driving into the student parking lot. At approximately 2:45 p.m., the School Resource Officer (SRO) conducted an investigative stop on the vehicle. During the stop, it was determined the driver had a concealed carry permit; however, the firearm was not properly concealed and was present on school grounds.

The driver was taken into custody and booked. Law enforcement charged the individual with carrying a concealed gun, a violation of N.C.G.S. 14-269(a1) (misdemeanor), and possession of a gun on educational property, a violation of N.C.G.S. 14-269.2(b) (felony).

Nash County Public Schools takes situations like this very seriously. The behaviors involved in this incident disrupted the safe and orderly environment of our school and violated Board of Education Policy 5020 – Visitors to the School and Policy Code: 4333 Weapons, Bomb Threats, Terrorist Threats, and Clear Threats to Safety.  The safety of our students, staff, and school community is our top priority.

We appreciate the swift response of our School Resource Officer and the Rocky Mount Police Department.
