G.R. Edwards Elementary Students Shine in Production of Disney’s The Lion King KIDS

The Lion King

Students from G.R. Edwards Elementary recently took the stage to perform Disney’s The Lion King KIDS, showcasing their creativity, talent, and teamwork during two evening performances held March 5 and March 6 at the Rocky Mount High School Black Box Theater.

The production featured a talented group of student performers who brought the beloved Disney story to life through music, acting, and storytelling. Families, staff, and community members gathered to celebrate the students’ hard work and the power of the arts in education.

The cast included:

  • Mufasa: Kendall Williams
  • Sarabi: Alani Clark
  • Zazu: Tervel Parish
  • Scar: La'nee Brown
  • Simba: Ashton Alston
  • Nala: Avah Graham
  • Shenzi: Xaria Cox
  • Banzai: Dakota Hedgepeth
  • Ed: Aubrey Farmer
  • Timon: Jhemma Strong
  • Pumbaa: Jewell Strong
  • Rafikis: Khloe Cozart, Dy'Nasty Jackson, Haylee Morris, Kiyomi Northington, Kaylin Wiggins
  • Along with a dedicated ensemble of students portraying hyenas and animals of the Pride Lands.

The performance was made possible through G.R. Edwards Elementary’s participation in the Disney Musicals in Schools “Stage Connect” program, an initiative from Disney Theatrical Group designed to help educators bring musical theater experiences to elementary school students.

G.R. Edwards Elementary was selected as one of more than 70 schools nationwide to participate in the program. Through Stage Connect, teachers receive professional development, instructional resources, and free performance rights to produce a Disney KIDS musical during the 2025–2026 school year.

Principal Dr. Allen M. Wilson said the experience provided a meaningful opportunity for students to grow both creatively and personally.

“We are honored that G.R. Edwards Elementary was selected for Disney’s Stage Connect program,” Wilson said. “This opportunity aligns perfectly with our mission to nurture creativity, confidence, and collaboration in every child. Bringing the arts to life through a Disney musical inspires our students to dream big and reminds them that when we work together, we can make magic happen right here in Thunderbird Country.”

The school also expressed appreciation to several supporters who helped make the production possible, including the Edwards PTO for funding cast and crew shirts, Brown Sugar Made LLC, Rocky Mount High School, and the families of participating students whose dedication and support helped bring the show to life.

Launched by Disney Theatrical Group in 2010, Disney Musicals in Schools has reached more than 100,000 students in public elementary schools across the United States and the United Kingdom. The Stage Connect expansion helps eliminate geographic barriers, making it possible for schools and communities nationwide to participate in musical theater programs.

For the students of G.R. Edwards Elementary, the production offered more than just a performance. It provided an opportunity to build confidence, strengthen teamwork, and experience the joy of storytelling through the performing arts.
